Locks & Keys for Harry Bridges
2021
Bronze
Locks and Keys for Harry Bridges is Mildred Howard’s sculptural tribute to labor leader Harry Bridges, whose advocacy reshaped the rights of West Coast maritime workers. Large‑scale locks and keys symbolize the doors Bridges opened for fair labor practices and collective power; the unlocked forms echo the freedoms he helped secure. Commissioned by Millennium Partners/WGB Ventures Inc. and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, the work marks Howard’s return to this site. Known for her sculptural installations and mixed‑media assemblage, Howard has received major honors including the Adeline Kent Award, a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, and a California Arts Council fellowship. Through familiar symbols transformed at scale, the installation connects personal gesture with public history, inviting viewers to reflect on the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights and the individuals who make collective progress possible.
